Health Benefits
of Eating Organic Foods
An article published
in The Globe and Mail recently suggests that eating organic foods is no more
beneficial to the body than eating non-organic. This information is based on a
study done by Stanford University Medical Center in California.
The study
stated that there’s no nutritional or safety differences between the two either
yet state the following:
“Organic foods are grown and harvested
without the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, growth hormones,
antibiotics, genetically modified organisms, irradiation and artificial
additives. Organic livestock are fed organic feed and are given access to the
outdoors, fresh air and sunlight”.
How can food grown
this way not be better for you? As a cancer coach and nutritionist I know that
“Organic” is the only type of food recommended for anyone with serious illness
due to the fact that these foods help lower the toxic load on your liver and in
turn your whole body. A 2003 study in the Journal
of Agricultural Food Chemistry, found that organic foods are better for
fighting cancer.
In 2007 the
findings of a four year European-Unions funded study found that:
·
Organic
fruit and vegetables contain up to 40 percent more antioxidants
·
Organic
produce had higher levels of beneficial minerals like iron and zinc
·
Milk
from organic herds contained up to 90 percent more antioxidants
They stated
that eating organic foods can even help increase the nutrient intake of people
who don’t eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetable each day.
Food grown in
healthier soil, with natural fertilizers and no chemicals has to be more
nutritious for you.
To ensure you
always get the freshest, most nutritious produce try to buy local and eat
seasonally or frozen (if organic) is the next best option.
