September is Men's Cancer Awareness Month
Top Three Cancers for Men in Canada
1.
Prostate
Cancer
The leading cause of cancer for
Canadian males is prostate cancer with 23,600 new cases expected in 2013 which
accounts for 25% of all new cases or 1 in 7 males expected to contract this
disease.
Most cases of prostate cancer
don’t occur until after age 50 but in recent years there has been a steady rise
in the percentage of men in their 30’s and 40’s with both prostate problems and
cancer.
Family history play’s an important role in your risk of developing
prostate cancer. For example the risk
doubles if a first-degree relative, such as a father or brother, has been
diagnosed especially before age 55. The
more first-degree relatives with prostate cancer a man has, the greater the
risk to himself of being diagnosed in his lifetime.
Other risk
factors include but are not limited to:
High fat diets, Diets high in
processed foods and meats, Excess milk and dairy products and Long term
inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis).
Signs and Symptoms include:
Frequent urination, especially at
night, difficulty starting or stopping the urine flow, a sense of incomplete
emptying of the bladder, blood in the urine or semen…
2.
Lung Cancer
Lung cancer has the second
highest rate of probability with 1 in 11 males expected to be diagnosed in
their lifetime.
The biggest risk factor is
smoking and represents 90% of cases in men.
Other causes include Exposure to toxins and viruses, Exposure to
secondhand smoke, radon gas exposure (in your home) etc.
Signs and Symptoms include:
In its early stage, lung cancer
has no symptoms, however as the cancer grows and travels to other organs a
chronic cough, shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing up blood are some of
the indications that may be present.
3.
Colorectal
Cancer
The third most diagnosed cancer
in men in Canada is Colorectal with 1 in 13 males expected to develop this form
of cancer in their lifetime.
The main factors that initiate
colorectal cancer are consumption of cooked red meat, high intake of refined
carbohydrates and poor vitamin intake as well as other very important factors.
Signs and Symptoms include:
In the early stages many people
experience no symptoms. Once the cancer
has progressed one might have blood in the stool, changes in normal bowel
habits, anemia, weight loss and constant fatigue.
